My wife and I each weigh 225-235 and are seniors. We have a near new king size Beautyrest plushtop firm mattress with their brand of memory foam. It's in excellent condition. In hindsight I should have gotten their latex plushtop.

I'm a side and back sleeper (mostly side) and have considerable pain behind my shoulders in the mornings. It's not on the tip of my shoulder but in my scapula area and spine area between my shoulders. I have no other lower back or spine problems with this matterss. I suspect the mattress is too firm.

After reading the recommendations in other threads I suspect the correct latex for us is the softer version. My concern is the thickness. We have a custom bed frame that's a little higher than most. Even using the shorter mattress foundation, adding 3" in height will make it more difficult for us to get into bed. I'd prefer to go with the 2" topper. What say you? Do you think going with the 2" instead of the 3" would be a mistake?

Thanks - Jay

Just bought a new CA-King mattress & box springs. The first one I tried was too soft and slept too warm. It had a 3" memory foam pillow-top built into it. I was able to change it out. I wrongfully chose an extra firm mattress with a 1.5" memory foam topper. It proved to be too hard even with the topper. These were both high quality 20 year guaranty Beauty Rest mattresses. My mattress change out option has been used up so I must fix what I have. I need something to soften-up the feel while still maintaining the underlying firm structure. I'm 6'2" and weigh 440 lbs.

Everything I've read seems to say latex is a better choice for me - especially because memory foam seems to sleep too warm for me. My sense is that I'll need something that is either 3" or 4" in depth. I was looking at the Ergo Soft & Firm toppers but wasn't really sure of which would be the be choice for my circumstance. Please point me in the right direction. Is the latex the better choice for me & if so which ergo should I choose?

Sorry so long, but...
Through all the research I've done learning about memory foam toppers, I've read that 3 lb mem foam toppers will feel slightly firmer than the equivilent 4 lb toppers, so I am wondering what I should use to either rule out a 3 lb topper altogether vs a 4 or even 5 lb topper. I am looking for a fairly firm topper with some give of course, I don't want it to feel like hard, wet sand when laying on it initially, or turning over to a different position, but I am looking for the most supportive feel, and after reading that a 4 lb topper is softer than say a 3 lb topper this kind of concerns me. I have owned what claimed to be either 2.5 or 3 lb., 3 in topper in the past (not 100% sure because it had tiny holes evenly spaced throughout, to help "ventilate" it to keep it cooler, even though I'm not sure it worked as it was still very warm to sleep on) and with the holes I suppose it could've been an even higher 3 lb. density, but because of the holes, it may have altered the weight of the product to look like it weighed less even though the overall density may have been higher, if that makes sense. It would alter the formula to calculate the true density since there are holes and slightly less visco foam vs a solid slab.
Anyway I was able to sleep great for at least 2+ years on it before it broke down and became too soft and much less supportive. So, with knowing that, and the fact that the 4 lb topper is slightly softer in feel to begin with, should I be looking at another 3 lb. topper due to the firmness over the 4 lb, or should I look at the 4 lb as it is maybe only "slightly" (not sure myself, can't compare) softer, but could be more durable and last longer? (I will for sure be ordering a 3 in due to being a side sleeper) And in this case, does softer = less supportive overall? I don't mind soft as long as I am still receiving all the benefits of relief on my pressure points, but like I said, my old topper softened up way too much over time, and I am not trying to replace it with another that is almost as soft as the worn out one is now. At this point it sounds llike any or all of your 3, 4, or 5lbs toppers would be an upgrade to begin with, as my first one was bought at a larger chain store and was made in China. So maybe I'd be ok with any of the choices? I still worry that the 4lb will be too soft though vs. the 3... Any info on 3lb vs 4lb or even 5lb in comparison to support as well as durability/longevity and what would be more appropriate, would be appreciated. My goal is support and longevity this time around, or else I could just purchase the same topper I had for another couple of years, which is the last resort in this case. Thanks!
Current stats: Me 135-40 lbs, side/stomach, sleeps warm, husband 190-200, all position sleeper/ sleeps cool

Hello, I've contacted a c.s. rep in the past about my questions, but couldn't seem to get any help, so I am now posting here. I am 5'5'' and about 135-40 lbs. and prefer to sleep only on my side and stomach. I've had lower back pain for several years now for whatever reason, and have been trying to find a sleep surface to help alleviate the pain. I am currently sleeping on a king size Talalay Latex mattress from a local chain retailer purchase about 4 months ago, and I believe it is still too soft. I have no idea what the ILD is as it is not listed anywhere on my tags attatched to the mattress which would've helped tremendously, I know! I am looking to purchase a Twin XL size mattress topper as my husband seems to be sleeping fine on the current mattress and I am not going to disrupt his sleep by making him sleep on something firmer than he may need as he has his own back issues and a past surgery, so I believe the Twin XL for myself would be just fine. The hard part is figuring out if the soft-med is too soft or if the med-firm is too firm. I am leaning towards the med-firm at this point, but I'm not sure if it would be too firm. I am wondering if it still has give when pressure is applied to it, or if it would be similar to sleeping on a floor, which I could never do. It would kill my back as the floor is way too hard. I do not want another mem foam topper as they have proven to break down extensively in the past with daily use, so I believe the latex is the better alternative. I'm just not sure if a med-firm would be appropriate and if so, knowing my weight and sleep positions, if I would need a 2'' or 3'', or if I should be still considering the soft-med at this point. Not being able to compare the 2 topper choices by feel is really frustrating as I am trying to avoid needing to return or exchange the topper altogether. That can't be cheap, and getting back into any packaging has to be a nightmare! Any help would be greatly appreciated. You know, selling some small block latex samples would really help customers in determing how soft or firm these pads really are. Anyway any help asap would be greatly appreciated as I've said. Thanks!

I'm 170lbs, 5'10". I sleep on my stomach and occaisionally the side. What size topper works best? Is there a look up table to figure this stuff out?

My lower back hurts when I sleep on our 2 year old Simmons Beauty rest (independant pocket coils). This is a fairly hard bed. I find that when I sleep on a softer conventional bed, my back doesn't hurt. My wife likes the bed as it is but is willing to consider a topper. We like that the movement on 1 side of the belt isn't felt on the other.

I've tried memory foam mattress at a hotel and definately rule that out. When I turn over, its uncomfortable until it forms the new shape. When it forms the new shape, I feel locked in.

I'm thinking that a Latex foam topper would work the best. I just need to make this bed softer with minimal change.

Can I get by with a 2" medium/soft Latex topper? Or, would a quilt/pillow top work better?

What I want is the luxuriously soft but supportive feel of the Sensus...but without the heat. I'm considering going with 3" of the 4lb Aerus Cool Comfort, but I'm concerned I may get the hammock effect around my waist or feel pressure points on my hips. I have back problems so I need good support that will hold me up but still feel luxurious and soft. If I sink-in more than I want (with the Cool Comfort), could I correct this by adding 1" of a 5 or 6 lb topper? Or do I need to look at a different solution? Any suggestions on how to get the feel of the Sensus without the heat?

as i mentioned in my previous post, i am looking to sort of create a "diy" latex mattress using a 2" or 3" topper on top of a firm base. any suggestions on what the best base would be? my first thought was of course a firm inexpensive spring mattress, but i am considering other options. i've been reading reviews on air mattresses and people really seem to love them, and i have a good memory of an air mattress-the most comfy bed i think i've ever slept on was in someone's guest room. they had a nice air mattress (one of the temp/guestroom type. not one of the fancy expensive ones that look like a real mattress, but also not one of the super-cheap camping ones either), with a super thick (probably 3") wool topper on it. it was like floating on a cloud :)
another consideration is a firm piece of foam. there is a foam shop in my town that sells basic all foam mattresses in 3-6 inch thicknesses and different firmnesses.
any advice on this? or does it even matter?

also, just something i've noticed: memory foam mattresses are always described as much softer than latex. this hasn't been my opinion of them. i find them to be quite hard until you lay on them long enough to ooze into them. then they feel awesome but only as long as you don't move AT ALL. as soon as you move they go back to being temporarily rock hard and lumpy on top of it. i know that cheap memory foam is much harder then the really dense stuff, but i've tried out tempurpedic and still found it to be quite hard, excepting maybe their most expensive model. latex is much softer and comfier in my opinion.

they say that the whole problem of memory foam being uncomfortable if you change positions is a moot concern because they are so pressure relieving that you simply don't change positions in your sleep. my theory on this is maybe that the hard bumps you hit every time your sleeping body tries to change positions sort of trains it not to move.

i also realized that in all of my asking for advice, i never mentioned my weight, which is important. i'm about 150, and would be sharing the bed with my boyfriend who is probably about 190.

I've had these beds for about 11-12 years, and they were bought from Relax the Back. Is there a repair facility inn the Daytona Beach, Fl area?

i'm need of a new mattress and am in love with latex mattresses, however i am also on a tight budget so i am looking into sort of building my own. I've done a ton of research and read a lot of reviews, and the consensus on all of the "eurotop" and "pillow top" mattresses is that they all seem to form uncomfortable body impressions. Some people luck out and this doesn't happen for them for a long period of time, but for many it happens quickly, and I can't deal with the idea of saving up hundreds of dollars and spending them on a big purchase that will be uncomfortable long before I can afford to replace it. I do like a medium firmness though so some sort of eurotop/plush type of thing is the feel i'm going for. I've read that in much of europe, they don't tend to spend exorbitant sums of money on fancy mattresses like we do here, instead they buy inexpensive firm mattress bases and then use toppers to make them comfy. then, when the topper starts to wear out they only have to worry about buying a new topper, and not spending huge sums on a whole mattress. i decided they had a good idea. Anyway, I've tried out a couple of solid core 100% latex mattresses and have loved them, and this is the general feel i am aiming for. I tried the one they have at Ikea (it was either the erfjord or the engenes) and found it to be very comfortable. i also tried an Englander brand latex spring mattress that I loved, the sales guy showed me a model of what's inside the mattress and it was essentially just a couple inches of latex on springs. It had what I would consider a medium feel-it was one step up from their cheapest latex mattress which was a bit firmer and felt less supportive (probably just had a thinner latex layer). They say that latex mattresses are extremely firm but i have never found them to be this way-they all feel fairly medium to me. I've tried out ikea's latex toppers and didn't like them at all-they felt way too soft and unsupportive. they gave me that sinking in/bottoming out feeling like a low quality mattress with a way too thick pillowtop.

So basically, I am looking for some guidance as to whether I should get the soft topper or the medium/firm topper, and whether 2" or 3" would be preferable. I've heard one of the admins in the forums say that the medium/firm topper is too firm for most people, but with an ild of around 18 the soft one sounds like it might be way too soft for me (but then one person said that they were returning their soft topper because they found it to be TOO firm, go figure). I am used to sleeping on a firm surface and always have, but while shopping around and testing out mattresses i've found that i actually prefer a more medium feel, as long as it is supportive! i know everything is returnable but i imagine the shipping cost to return it is fairly hefty, so i'd like to avoid this. Would it maybe be advisable to get like a 3" medium/firm topper and top it with a 2" soft? this might be out of my price range but could be accomplished over time. anyway, any guidance would be appreciated. thanks!
